Summary
  • Communications Week summarizes the results of a survey of almost 500 businesses and agencies. Network managers respond to a questionnaire, providing information about technologies, standards, problems, network funding and compensation. Trends include dramatic network budget increases and a shift away from funding for personnel and toward equipment. Only 3% of respondents say SNA will predominate on their networks in three years, which compares to 62% for TCP/‚ÄčIP and 17% for Novell Inc's IPX. Some users are avoiding difficult networking decisions, such as the choice between frame relay and ATM, by outsourcing their requirements to carriers. SunConnect's SunNet Manager is doing well among SNMP-compliant network managers. Microsoft Corp's Windows, Windows NT and SQL Server are becoming industry standards.
