Summary
  • Market research firm BIS Strategic Decisions forecasts that by 1998 about 40 percent of desktop PCs will have PCMCIA slots, but currently only 2 percent of desktop machines ship with PCMCIA slots preinstalled. Several companies sell PCMCIA drives that can be installed in empty drive bays of desktop computers to let PCMCIA cards, or PC Cards, be used with the systems, and external PC Card readers are also available that attach to desktop machines through the parallel port. Greystone Peripherals' $299 CardDock has two 15mm PC Card slots side by side and fits into a half-height drive bay; each slot accommodates a Type I, Type II, or Type III PC Card. ACMA Computers' $169 Impression PCMCIA CARDdrive internal card drive provides one PCMCIA slot and accommodates two Type I or Type II cards or one Type III card. Also described are CNF Peripherals' $299 CARDport eX external card reader and Maxtor's $175 DeskRunner internal drive.
