Summary
  • PCMCIA cards, or PC Cards, provide portable computer users with several megabytes of storage, fax modem functions, LAN connectivity, and other capabilities by inserting a device about the size of a credit card into a slot. There are currently more than 150 PC Cards on the market, and 86 percent of all portable computers shipped in 1994 will support PC Cards, according to the PCMCIA. The PCMCIA standard allows such peripheral devices as modems and memory cards to be interchangeable between computers and platforms, including notebooks, palmtops, desktop machines, and PDAs. Type I cards were originally used for memory as RAM. Type II cards add I/O functions and are used most often as modems and LAN adapters. Type III cards are about twice as thick as Type II cards (or about a half inch) and are used for I/O devices requiring a larger size, such as hard disks and wireless modems. The various types of PC Cards are described, and problems with the PCMCIA standard are examined.
