Summary
  • IP was the first network protocol to provide common addressing and routing for various types of networks; it provides a universal addressing standard and a method for moving data across an internetwork. Internetwork routing in the TCP/IP environment dictates the way the IP protocol implements network addressing, the address formats used, how nodes find IP routers on the network, and the way routers direct traffic across an internetwork. An IP address is 4 bytes long and is comprised of a network portion and a host portion, both of which are assigned by an administrator according to the Network Information Center regulatory body of the Internet; how this is done is described. Subnet masking determines how much of the IP address is used for the network address and how much is used for the host; the Address Resolution Protocol is used to translate an IP address into a Data-Link address. Also described is the Routing Information Protocol and Internetwork Control Message Protocol.
