Summary
  • Commonwealth Edison, an electric company in northern Illinois, uses LANs comprised of more than 4,300 IBM-compatible workstations and 52 NetWare file servers to manage its six nuclear generating stations, 10 fossil generating stations, and corporate offices throughout the area. The LANs run databases, spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail, and other general-office applications; corporate accounting and the customer database run on mainframes but are accessible over the LANs. As the networks grew, use of NetWare 3.11 caused many server-by-server management problems; the company decided to upgrade to NetWare 4.0 to alleviate disk space problems and increase the maximum number of clients per server from 250 to 1,000. Careful planning of the upgrade made the program a success; the planning process, network management issues, and the benefits Commonwealth Edison has realized as a result of the upgrade are examined.
