Summary
  • The first step in migrating to NetWare 4.x is to decide whether to use a 'top-down' strategy or a 'bottom-up' strategy: the former requires that upper management plan the ideal corporatewide tree and then migrate the entire organization at the same time, while the latter entails individual departments migrating when they are ready, regardless of the status of the rest of the company. A manager must be assigned for the directory tree, whether a group or an individual, and then naming standards for objects in the directory must be established. The frame types that will be loaded on servers and workstations must be determined, and coexistence issues must be addressed. NetWare utilities must be separated during the migration process according to their version numbers; also described are file system cleanup, bindery cleanup, across-the-wire migration, in-place migration, and migration workstations.
