Summary
  • Vendors of PCMCIA hard drives seek to snag an early market-share lead by focusing on the retail channel. The nascent market has been sparked by the recent debut of portable computers with Type III PCMCIA slots, which accept 1.8-in PCMCIA hard disks. MiniStor Peripherals Corp's $499 MP260P3 can store 260MB when the bundled Stacker Anywhere compression software is used. MiniStor is co-developing promotional materials with CompUSA Inc. MiniStor may have the early merchandising lead, but faces competition from Maxtor Corp's MobileMax 131 131MB hard disk. Maxtor has not given a suggested retail price for the MobileMax; its predecessor, the 105MB MobileMax 105, lists for $539. Maxtor is promoting the MobileMax 131's ruggedness.
