Summary
  • Many established computer firms are finding viable solutions from Russian software houses, and are generally pleased with the wealth of programming talent available. ParaGraph International, a Moscow-based firm, made several million dollars by licensing its handwriting-recognition technology to Apple. The company is now working on new projects such as a 'virtual home museum,' wherein users display photos on a computer-simulated art gallery wall. Also under development is a 3D medical diagnostic program and a fantasy interactive game played over modems. Russia's most legendary software success is the popular Tetris game, invented in 1985 by mathematics expert Alexei Pazhitnov. Steepler Corp, also based in Moscow, is hoping to gain a share of the game market with its 'Dendy' game system, patterned after the ubiquitous Nintendo system. Steepler's 'Spider' spreadsheet is also finding some success; Canadian-based Corel Corp has included it with the Corel Draw package.
