Summary
  • US semiconductor manufacturers are expected to increase their lead in the world market because they are spending twice as much on capital investments than their Japanese rivals. US companies have 43 percent of the global market for chips compared to Japan's market share of 40 percent and Europe's 9 percent share. The rest of the world has 7 percent of the $85 billion world semiconductor market. US semiconductor companies increased their capital investment 133 percent since 1991 to satisfy growing demand for semiconductors. US semiconductor manufacturers plan to spend $9.7 billion for capital investments in 1994, with Intel Corp spending $2.4 billion itself. Industry analysts estimate Japan will invest $4.2 billion and South Korea will spend $4 billion in 1994 for semiconductor plants and equipment, but South Korea will match or surpass Japan in capital investments in 1995.
