Summary
  • The film industry is using digital technology for everything from creating special effects to pre-production work to synthetic actors. One upcoming television program will contain 260 special effects, including a six-minute trip through cyberspace, 2-D on set playback, image-processed holograms and a two-minute freezer-and-skeleton sequence. In addition to programs, commercials are becoming influenced by special effects and for many animation companies, commercials and station IDs are a good source of income. Part of the growth of the use of special effects is the declining cost. One producer believes that special effects are now as inexpensive as filming live action and when studios discover this, they will want to put more effects into movies. The latest trend in special effects is creating synthetic actors, which are digital representations of people, usually based on models.
