Summary
  • Telephone customers are turning towards a variety of telecommunications services such as Caller ID, call-return and Call Trace, in order to fight back against harassment from prank telephone calls. Call-return service lets users press a few keys on their telephone keypad to connect them to the last person who dialed their telephone number. The service works within local calling areas, but does not work with cellular telephones or pay phones that are not designed to accept incoming calls. Caller ID service requires special equipment installed in the homes of customers and will display the name and telephone number of the person calling. Call Trace service records callers' telephone numbers in a computer, which forwards them to the police department for investigation. Call return services typically cost between $3 to $5 per month, but some telephone companies are experimenting with charging by the call.
