Summary
  • New developments in program development technology present developers with a wide range of choices. Object-oriented data bases provide developers with superior mapping capabilities to in-memory data structures. Problems with object-oriented data bases include concurrency and a lack of access predictability when being utilized in a multi-user environment. Some relational data base environments utilize object-oriented techniques. End users should convert to object-oriented data base technology to increase quality and productivity, improve performance, and utilize distributed functionality. The COBOL programming language, in use for forty years, is not well-suited for development of applications with graphical user interfaces (GUI). Programmers should consider switching from COBOL to fourth-generation programming languages. However, programmers should note that COBOL continues to be the language of choice for certain applications.
