Edition notes: The first edition was published in 1898. The second edition, published in 1969, added a new section by C.E. Sayers providing detail about the letter writers. The third edition, published in 1983, included Sayers’ notes and a new foreword by Helen Vellacott.

Romanov-Hughes (n.d., citation below) notes that the work was substantially reorganised in the 1969 and 1983 editions. “These later editions grouped the letters under the subject headings of First Seekers; Portland Bay, Western District; North East and Gippsland; Central Plains, Wimmera; The Mallee and the Murray and Aborigines. The letters of John Carfrae, Charles Wale Sherard, Henry Dwyer and Edward Grimes were omitted as was a list of names and specimens of the language of the Barrabool Aborigines prepared by Mrs. F. A. Davenport, a daughter of Charles Wightman Sievewright.”

Citations to authors and letters in the work need to be careful to cite the edition used when providing a page number, as these are different in the different editions.
