Eichelberger's personal and official correspondence are included in Part 3 of this collection. The bulk of the material is for the years 1942-1961 and contains much on General Douglas MacArthur and events in Japan after 1945. Most of the personal letters, 1942-1945, were written by Eichelberger to his wife, describing the fighting in the Pacific and the difficulties of jungle life. Documents relating to campaigns in the Philippines, Java (Dutch East Indies), New Guinea and the Solomon Islands are included. After leaving Japan Eichelberger served in the War Department and later in the Pentagon as an advisor and there are many interesting letters to friends and colleagues dealing with the situation in the Far East. Prominent individuals represented in the material include: Japanese Prime Ministers Yoshida Shigeru, Shidehara Kijuro and Katayam Tetsu, General Clovis Byers, General Sir Thomas Blamey, General Krueger, General Herring, General George Marshall, General Robert C. Richardson, Major General R.K. Sutherland. The material includes letters from Shigeru Yoshida, Kineshichi Masuda and General Eisenhower.
