The Rocks is Sydney's earliest surviving neighbourhood, and one of its most distinctive and best-known precincts. In The Rocks: Life in Early Sydney Grace Karskens explores the early Rocks, a lost town largely submerged below the developments of succeeding decades. She builds up a vivid picture of the lives of its earliest white inhabitants, the convicts and ex-convicts who built their side of the town of the steep, rocky slopes overlooking the harbour. A wealth of historical documents, pictures, maps and archaeological evidence allows her to recover the words and gestures, the tastes and habits, the aspirations and fears, and the material life of the dealers, publicans, labourers, artisans, watermen, washerwomen, servants and prostitutes who lived there.
