Summary
  • Computed tomography (CT), formerly widely applied only as a medical tool, is becoming commonly used to seek out cracks, voids, foreign objects, and weaknesses in manufactured products. The technique uses high energy x-rays to bombard the test item while arrays of sensors record and digitize the data. The actual on-screen CT images are computer-processed and enhanced and require little expertise to interpret. So far, CT's application has been restricted to such exotic items as rockets and nose cones, but future application is seen for turbine blades, engine castings, oil drilling cores, and many other yet undefined uses. Price is one of two major setbacks, since industrial-grade CT scanners need levels of X-ray intensity almost 110 times higher than their medical counterparts. As a result, commercial CT scanners cost from $1 million to $10 million apiece. The other major limitation of present CT technology application is its slowness, although progress is being made in enhanced speed achieved through improved software developments.
