Summary
  • Fault tolerant computer systems benefit both patient care and hospital productivity. Fault tolerant systems can accept a component failure and continue to operate as though no failure has occurred. Hardware-based fault-tolerant systems have advantages over the older "loosely coupled" software-based approach, and prices of both are dropping. Hospitals should evaluate the impact of downtime in determining their needs for fault tolerant systems.
