Summary
  • Corporate expenditures on computer systems are increasing. The Ennismore Company conducted a survey on the information systems (IS) functions of more than 100 companies of varying sizes. Data was collected on behalf of 'InformationWEEK magazine'. Companies were ranked on 50 variables involving the effective use of computing. Expenditures, planning and staffing were evaluated. Expenditures included cost of software, maintenance, personnel, procedures and planning. Firms rated most effective spend an average of 1.5 percent gross revenue on systems. Firms rated least effective spend an average of 0.8 percent on systems. Survey results disclosed effective systems planning is directly linked to business planning. Results also indicated user communities should share the cost of information systems. Management should endeavor to maintain a balance between supply and user demand.
