Apple Computer Inc is pushing into corporate America with PC-Mac data transfer capabilities, a new crop of laser printers, a scanner, and at least one new version of the Macintosh microcomputer. A laser printer targeted for individual users and a low-cost flat-bed scanner are expected to be released as early as Jan 1988. An inexpensive laser printer could sell three times as many as the current versions of LaserWriter. Apple expects to ship around 80,000 LaserWriter Plus printers this year. The new laser printer uses QuickDraw instead of PostScript and is not expected to connect to the AppleTalk LAN. The flat-bed scanner will only work with Macintosh microcomputers. A high-end LaserWriter using PostScript is expected to have a 20MHz version of Motorola's 68020 microprocessor, a 40M-byte hard-disk, and up to 4M bytes of memory. Fully configured and running the MultiFinder multitasking operating system the new laser printer could be used as a LAN server. Apple has also shown a new machine the utilizes Motorola's 68000 microprocessor that is half the size of a Macintosh and could be a diskless workstation to compete with low-end computer-aided design and manufacturing systems. The ability to exchange data between Macintosh microcomputers and IBM machines will increase due to 1988's new products.
