Biography
  • James Michael (Jimmy) Sharman was born in 1912 in Narrandera, New South Wales. In 1926 he attended his first Sydney Royal Easter Show, working in his father's boxing troupe tent. Jimmy Sharman Senior started the boxing circuit after his own successful professional boxing career ended in 1911. Jimmy Junior took over the business in 1955. The tent formed part of the Australian show landscape until 1971, when regulations barred boxers fighting more than once a week. Sharman then turned to dodgem cars in partnership with Reg Grundy. Sharman was a talented rugby league player from the time of his schooldays at St. Joseph's College in Sydney. He later played for Western Suburbs Magpies between 1934-1939, becoming First Grade captain in 1938. Sharman retired from rugby league in 1939 to become a journalist.
