Summary
  • Western Star Trucks were first introduced to Australia in 1983, with its main assembly line located at Wacol, Brisbane. Russell Hinze officially opened the new Assembly Plant.
  • Russell James Hinze was born at Oxenford, Queensland, in 1919, being the son of a dairy farmer. He had little formal education, having left school at the age of twelve to help his father on the family farm. He became a dairy farmer himself and when only thirty-one, rose to the chiarmanship of the South Coast Co-operative Dairy Association. He was elected to State Parliament in 1966 in a Gold Coast seat after fifteen years on the Albert Shire Council, nine of them as shire chairman.
  • Hinze was known as 'the Minister for Everything' and has been described as 'one of the most competent Cabinet Ministers in the Bjelke-Petersen Government'. His portfolios included Local Government, Main Roads, Police and Racing. He was also one of the most colourful characters in Queensland politics recommending castration for sex offenders, the death penalty for killers and delighting in appearing at 'beer belly' contests without his shirt, matching beer guts with the best of them. He died in a Gold Coast private hospital on 29 June 1991 after a long battle with intestinal cancer. (Information taken from: Courier Mail 1 July 1991)
