Biography
  • Sir John Campbell Longstaff served as an official war artist with the Australian Imperial Force from 1918-1919 (source: Australian dictionary of biography). George James Coates enlisted in the Territorial Royal Army in 1915 and served until 1919. He was never an official war artist, though he did produce many portraits of World War 1 heroes (source: Australian dictionary of biography).

  • Condition : good, gilt frame, damaged.
  • Inscriptions: signed 'George J Coates" top right. On reverse: Exhibition label (torn) of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and ownership label of Dora Meeson, (Coates's wife); Salon de 1921, Societe des artistes Francais stamped in red ink on stretcher.
