The photographer of these Tasmanian convict portraits in the NLA, QVMAG,TMAG,and Archives Tasmania collections was commercial and police photographer Thomas j. Nevin or T.J. Nevin. The attribution to the Commandant at Port Arthur A.H. Boyd is an error and misattribution (see Kerr 1992:568). A.H.Boyd played no role in the provision of these mugshots for the Tasmanian colonial government. Clark's essay referenced against these records is her personal and worthless opinion, unsubstantiated by facts.

It is not possible to establish the identity of the photographer who captured these intriguing images. Descendants of the Tasmanian photographer Thomas Nevin actively promote the case for attribution to him. Examination of surviving archival documents relating to Port Arthur supports the attribution to A.H. Boyd.

In the absence of documentary evidence confirming the photographer's identity, the National Library stands by its statement of attribution.

The Library has closed comments on all images attributed to A.H. Boyd, and removed all comments added since October 2010. This decision was made reluctantly, and in response to continuing exchange of aggressive and potentially defamatory comments by a small number of individuals over a period of several years.
