Summary
  • The first animated cartoon by the English discoverer of animation, Walter R. Booth, a professional magician, was inspired by the photographic tricks of the co-founder of Vitagraph, James Stuart Blackton, which he first used in animated title cards and then animation of caricatural faces in 'Humorous Phases of Funny Faces' (1906). Booth's special contribution was to transform animated drawings of faces into live-action figures by the use of dissolves or stop-action substitution. Like Blackton's film, 'Comedy Cartoons' begins with a smoking gag and also borrows the moving clown cutout from Blackton.
