Summary
  • Renoir's last film was made for television. It is four vignettes recapitulating themes and methods in a kind of coda to his career. A tramp couple tragically retain their love for each other in the 'The Last Christmas', a piece in the mode of stylised theatre. A woman is obsessed with shining parquet floors in 'The Electric Floor-Waxer', a satire of urban life. Jeanne Moreau, on stage, sings a sentimental song from 'La Belle Epoque'. The fourth episode, 'The King of Yvetot', which also takes its title from a song, is a story of infidelity and tolerance set in the country. Renoir himself introduces each episode.
