Summary
  • Attenbrow discusses major archaeological projects she has worked on and their overall significance: - from 1979-87 the Upper Mangrove Creek Catchment Project and how she become involved in that for her doctoral thesis; from 1989 the Port Jackson Archaeological Project which is the first detailed , systemmatic investigation of Aboriginal life in the Sydney Metropolitan Area before European settlement and primarily concentrates on the differences in diet and material life between the different peoples who inhabited the area, funding sources, Stage 1 being a review and assessment of the conditions and research value of middens, Stage 2 where eight sites were excavated in marine, estuarine and freshwater environments, Stage 3 where excavation analysis is compared to the ethnohistorical record (such as straps, nets, spears, etc.)
  • Attenbrow speaks about the results revealing that there were more sites discovered here, than in national parks and wildlife reserves, resulting in a much better knowledge of the development of coastal economies amongst the natives and the knowledge needed to better manage and protect Aboriginal heritage in the Sydney area, the use of Aboriginal workers trained in field work and their value as well as employing laypeople in the excavations and their relative contributions, the 1994 guidelines on managing and using Aboriginal sites for Indigenous Cultural Heritage Protection Program, involvement of stakeholders, other projects include the Lightning Brothers Project at Wardaman County near Katherine, N.T. (1989-1994), and professional consulting, popularisation of archaelogy through the public programs of the Australian Museum, Australian Museum exhibitions and her publications, whether enough forums exist to disseminate her work, possibility of opening up excavation sites to a wider public, government policy implications.
