  • Pollard speaks about the numerous researchers and scientists he has worked with on various marine projects; his work with the Australian Museum; his role in the Australian Society for Fish Biology; his work at NSW Fisheries which had national implications. He speaks about being asked to examine the impact of the construction and operation of the proposed Jervis Bay nuclear power station on fish and fisheries; carry out environmental studies on freshwater fish and fish habitats in the tributary of the Alligator River in what is now Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory in relation to the establishment of the Ranger uranium mine.
  • Pollard speaks about the importance of seagrass ecology studies in Australia, looking at how fish use habitats like seagrass beds, mangrove swamps and rocky reefs, proving to be important nursery areas for small fish; his work on marine protected areas, Solitary Islands, Jervis Bay, Lord Howe Island; Ocean Rescue 2000, a project to do a biogeographic study of the coastline of Australia for a marine reserve system around the whole country; Marine Parks Authority co-operative venture between NSW Fisheries and National Parks and Wildlife Service; his threatened species work; work done on introduced marine pest species; sustainability of the marine environment.
Biography
  • Dr. David Pollard is Principal Research Scientist, Threatened Species and Conservation Ecology at NSW Fisheries. Dr Pollard's career has included scientific research and project supervision over a wide rang of marine, estuarine and freshwater fish ecology and aquatic habitat and biodiversity conservation programs. He has served as President of both the Australian Society of Fish Biology and the Australian Society for Limnology. He is an Honorary Research associate of the Australian Museum.
