Australia. Australian Army. Battalion, 48th; World War (1914-1918); Leane family.
During the course of World War I over 330,000 Australians served overseas. What is unique is that all of them were volunteers. Many of them enlisted out of a sense of patriotism, but many others enlisted because their mates did. The 48th was raised from the 16th Battalion in Egypt after the withdrawal from Gallipoli.
