Includes Soviet citizens listening to the declaration on war in Moscow; Soviet soldiers in the field and on campaigns; scenes of destruction in Berlin, Budapest, Vienna, and Murmansk; sailors at Sebastapolʹ; Soviet soldiers raising the flag which Khaldeĭ provided over the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate; Soviet soldiers in Berlin; Victory Day celebrations in Moscow. Also Allied Generals de Latre, Eisenhower, Montgomery, and Zhukov at Berlin; Stalin at Potsdam Conference; Khaldeĭ standing near Hermann Göring at the Nurnberg Trials; Khaldeĭ and Soviet poet Konstantine Simonov posed on a street; Soviet pilot Boris Safonov by his airplane; Generals Zhukov and Vershinin at a parade(?).
Biography
  • Soviet photojournalist Evgeniĭ Khaldeĭ was born in 1917 in Stalino (Donet︠s︡ʹk), Ukraine and died in 1997. He worked for TASS, the official Soviet press agency, for most of the years between 1935 and 1972 and had photos published in Pravda. A supporter of Stalin, Khaldeĭ became famous for the images he took during World War II, when he covered the Red Army and events in Murmansk, Sebastopolʹ, and from Moscow to Berlin, including the Potsdam Peace Conference and the Nürnberg Trials.
