  • Calaby talks about his family background; early interest in natural history and reading; WWII and conscription to Munitions Supply Laboratories to analyse the fillings from captured Japanese equipment. He then discusses meeting Doug Waterhouse from Division of Economic Entomology, CSIR (Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (Australia) and joining CSIR in 1945. Calaby then talks about the development of his interest in mammals and birds; origins of Wildlife Survey Section under Francis Ratcliffe and its work, in particular, dealing with the rabbit plague. He then discusses his work in Western Australia; appointment of Harry Frith as officer-in-charge of the Section in 1961; study of the rock-wallaby from 1973; origins of Conservation Foundation, Australian National Wildlife Collection and Australian Mammal Society and his work in the writing of a biography of Baldwin Spencer.
