Aboriginal Australians.; Aboriginal Australians in art.; Melbourne (Vic.) - Social life and customs.
Shows an Aboriginal Australian couple dressed in ragged cast-offs of European clothing; their attitude mimics the assurance of a well-dressed European couple. In the background, a respectable citizen, out walking with his wife, is horrified at this inversion of the proper order. The Aboriginal man meets the viewer's eye directly and confidently: despite the humorous intention of this print, it is one of the few depictions of urban Aboriginal Australian people, in the colonial period, which shows them as something other than objects of scorn or pity.
