Summary
  • RECENT COLONIAL PUBLICATIONS AND BOOKS RELATING TO THE BRITISH COLONIES. England looking on her Colonies can say: ■* Here are lands and seas, spice-lands, corn-lands, timber-lands, overarched arched by zodiacs and stars, clasped by many-sounding seas ; wide spaces of the Maker s building fit for the cradle yet of mighty Nations and their Sciences and Heroisms.. Fertile continents still inhabited by wild beasts are mine, into which all the distressed populations of Europe might pour themselves, and make at once an Old World and a New World human. By the eternal fi'at of the gods, this must yet one day be ; this, by all the Divine Silences that rule this Universe silent to fools, eloquent and awful to the hearts of the wise, is incessantly at this moment, and at all moments, commanded to begin to be. Unspeakable deliverance and new destiny of thousandfold expanded manfulness fulness for all men, dawns out of the Future here. To me has fallen the god-like task of initiating all that: of me and my Colonies, the abstruse Future asks, Are you wise enough for so sublime a destiny ? Are you tqp foolish ? ” J Carlyle, Latter-Day Pamphlets , 1850. Bartholomew (John) British Colonial Pocket Atlas; a Series of 54 Maps Illustrating the Geography of the British Empire. Cr. Bvo. Murray, 24/- “ I remember a great statesman saying that an official had so much manuscript to read that he could hardly be expected to read anything that was printed. I think, however, that officials must be very busy indeed who cannot find time to read two remarkable books which have appeared this year. One of these was written by the Austrian statesman, Baron Hiibner, a Conservative among Conservatives in his own country, but who overflowed with sympathy, not only for Englishmen, but for our more democratic relations across the ocean.” — Lord Granville. “ One is doubtlul whether to admire most the physical or mental energies of the author of these charming volumes . . We have never read a book more free from any traces of servility. He is fresh, crisp, and lively ; his observations are incisive, and the whole work replete with interest and novelty. . . . Our readers have been in luck in having two such books as Baron Hiibner’s ‘ Through the British Empire,’ and Mr. Froude’s ‘Oceana’ offered to them in one year. Years may pass without the appearance of any record of travel so original, and from which so much is to be learned. However much these two able and accomplished authors may differ, they have one thing in common —entire freedom from clap-trap, and from any taint of the doctrinaire.— The Academy. ** n . s( ype instances titles have been taken from Press Notices, and prices have not been obtainable.
