Summary
  • The Pyrmont Hospital, also known as the Cathedral Hospital, was situated on the corner of Adelaide and Ann Street, Brisbane. It was purchased by the Anglican Church in 1916 and later the building was sold for removal circa 1920 when a larger hospital was built as a War Memorial, after the First World War, and that building is still standing and now known as St. Martins House and is heritage listed. The building was built originally in the 1860s by J.D. Bergin of Samford, Queensland and he owned it for about 30 years.Newspaper article about the proposed new hospital:trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/177221770?searchTerm=n...Newspaper article about the Old Pyrmont Hospital:trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/215600359?searchTerm=p...reads:OLD PYRMONT HOSPITAL To the EditorSir, in reading the report of the sale of the Old Pyrmont Hospital in today’s ‘Daily Mail’ which you describe as having been sold for removal at £491 and that it was one of Brisbane’s very old landmarks, I can add a little more to the ancient history of this old noted home as it was built by my father, the late J.D. Bergin of Samford, early in the sixties and owned by him for about 30 years, along with several other homes that are still standing in the vicinity and during his ownership it was occupied for a considerable time by a Mr Suter, an architect. The late J.F. Garrick, afterwards Sir J.F. Garrick was also a tenant and also some of the Griffith family occupied. My father sold this property to Miss F.H. O’Reilly. If the late Hon. T. Macdonald-Patterson did own it, as you state, it could not have been for long before coming in the hands of the present owners.Yours etcBasil BerginToomoo, Hamilton April 8, 1920
