Summary
  • The Victorian community has experienced and endured an unparalleled epidemic thunderstorm asthma event, which has tested emergency and health services across the state and particularly in Melbourne and Geelong. This was unfortunately the largest ever recorded epidemic thunderstorm asthma event in the world and, tragically, is thought to have contributed to a number of deaths that the State Coroner is currently investigating. This report documents the nature and impacts of the event and forms a pillar in the Department of Health and Human Services' response to plan and prepare for similar future events across Victoria. It also provides useful information and forewarning for others around Australia and the world that an epidemic thunderstorm asthma event can occur on such a scale.
