Summary
  • Image published in 'City of Prahran jubilee history and illustrated handbook: South Yarra, Toorak, Malvern, etc', Melbourne: Periodicals Publishing Company, 1906 p.175. Notes can be located to accompany most of the photos by consulting the indexes at the front of the book; some of these notes are quite detailed, though the tone is usually self-congratulatory, suggesting that inclusion may have been by subscription.
  • [transcript of text]
  • Mr Charles Smartt carries on a new and second-hand furniture and general dealing establishment in Commercial Road, at the corner of Grattan Street, and also in the market buildings at the entrance to the markets in Commercial Road. The illustrations elsewhere in this book show the premises which, with Mr Smartt's name, are a landmark in the district. The stock carried comprises everything useful and good which the extensive trade can require. The packing and quick delivery of goods to all parts of Victoria and the Commonwealth are features of a well-managed and prosperous concern. Mr Smartt has been, for 21 years, a resident of the district.
  • For further information on Charles Smartt and the Smartt family see #60238.
  • Black and white photoprint of Charles Smartt's new and secondhand furniture store on Commercial Road, corner Grattan Street. Smartt had another store nearby at the entrance to the Prahran markets at 181 Commercial Road.
