Summary
  • Black and white photoprint of Mrs Webb's corsetry shop in Chapel Street. A sign advertises her as a "French stay and surgical band maker".
  • Research by PhD candidate Rosemary Knight has found the following:
  • The business was started around 1865-1867 by Mrs S Webb - the 1903 Sands and McDougall directory states that the Chapel Street business had been in operation for 36 years, but advertisements in the Caulfield and Elsternwick Leader 1 November 1890:6, and Oakleigh Leader 20 September 1890:6 say that it had been established for 25 years.
  • There was also a corsetry business at 144 Sturt Street, Ballarat owned by Mrs Sarah Webb. The two businesses seem to have been operating at the same time. Sometime around 1890 the Ballarat business ceased to be listed in the post office directories, and by late in the century the Chapel Street business was taken over by Miss Amelia Webb.
  • Similar information is also found in Bailliere's Post Office Directories and Wise's Post Office Directories.
  • A pdf file is attached to this record -- an advertisement that shows some of the items made by Mrs Webb.
  • Image published in 'City of Prahran jubilee history and illustrated handbook: South Yarra, Toorak, Malvern, etc', Melbourne: Periodicals Publishing Company, 1906 p.178. Notes can be located to accompany most of the photos by consulting the indexes at the front of the book; some of these notes are quite detailed, though the tone is usually self-congratulatory, suggesting that inclusion may have been by subscription.
