Summary
  • There is a growing body of state- and territory-based research in Australia into the characteristics and patterns of domestic violence offending. This report consolidates this research to provide an overall picture of what is known about domestic violence offenders, offending, and reoffending in Australia. A systematic review was conducted into the local quantitative literature on the individual characteristics of domestic violence offenders, the proportion of domestic violence offenders have a prior history of offending, and the prevalence of reoffending among domestic violence offenders. Despite the wide range of data sources, samples and measures of violence, the findings of the studies were remarkably consistent: five individual-level risk factors were consistently identified as being associated with general reoffending by domestic violence perpetrators: gender, age, Indigenous status, socioeconomic status, and prior offending.
