Biography
  • In 1951, George arrived in Sydney on a Nanssen passport, after a one month journey on the Chungking ship followed by Irina a few months later. In 1953, he and his wife moved to Brisbane. They settled at Buranda. In 1957, he opened a studio in Given Terrace, Paddington where he gave private lessons and staged his first exhibition. In 1960, he became a part-time teacher at Brisbane’s Central Technical College. He was later offered a full-time position and taught at the college for 16 years. In 1968, he opened a studio and Art Academy at Kangaroo Point. In 1970, he completed a bust of Captain Cook for the Bi-Centenary which is located at Parliament House. His subjects included Archbishop James Duhig, Ringo Starr, and Joh Bjelke-Petersen. Sculptors Rhyl Hinwood, Catharina Hampson and Phillip Piperides are among his former students.
  • George Virine was born Yuri Millievich Ezersky in Moscow, on 15 March 1920. He was educated in Moscow and went on to study sculpture in that city. In 1940 he was conscripted into the Red Army for three years. He took part in the Battle of Smolensk and became a machine gunner and a guerrilla partisan. He was captured by the Germans and sent to Buchenwald Concentration Camp. In 1944, he escaped and made his way to Luxembourg where he carried out sculpture commissions. In 1946, he moved to Paris where he worked as a painter and eventually gained employment at Villeroy & Boch in Audun le Tiche making moulds for porte coutures (knife rests) and handles for vases.
