Summary
  • Jacques Thibaud: Master Violinist The late JACQUES THIBAUD seen on the concert platform during one of his tours. By RENE DUMESNIL # The aeroplane seems fatal to French virtuosos. Jacques Thibaud, like Ginette Neveu, Dominique Blot, and Claude Crussard, died in a plane crash. Two months ago, when he was aboard, the Paris-Saigon plane struck a mountain near Barcelonnette. With his death we lost one of the most brilliant and famous violinists of the French school. SOMETIMES he would conduct an orchestra, usually on the occasion of the launching of a young violinist. Not much more than two months ago he conducted the Orchestra of the Society of Concerts of the Paris Conservatorium servatorium when the Jacques Thibaud Prize was being presented. He and Mme Marguerite Long instituted stituted a competition which is held bi-annually for young pianists and violinists. Ten prizes are awarded. But it is not only on account of this that Thibaud will be remembered. Gramophone records make it possible now to keep with us permanently the most transient of all arts: that of the Left: SIMON BARERE, who will be heard in the programme for The Music Lover on Friday, November 20, at 2.00 p.m. musical performer. Recordings exist which Thibaud made with Alfred Cortot tot and Pablo Casals—a famous trio. JACQUES THIBAUD ** was born in Bordeaux deaux in 1880. He was a child prodigy. At the age of seven he had his first violin lessons, and his progress gress was so rapid that, eighteen months later, he was already appearing ing in public in a concert given by the pupils. His real debut was made at the age of eleven, when he appeared on the platform of the Angers Concert Society. After that he went to the Paris Conservatorium into a class conducted by the famous Marsick. At 15 he won the first prize. Another Frenchman, Edouard Colonne, who was himself a good violinist before he became a conductor and founded the association of the Concerts du Chatelet, immediately engaged the young prizewinner, who was much sought after by other orchestras. The manner in which Jacques Thibaud performed his work among the first violins won him in the next season the position of first violin soloist. He was then only seventeen years of age. In 1899 he undertook his first concert cert tour. He travelled throughout Prance, playing in the main cities either concertos with orchestra or giving recitals. A Berlin, 1902, concert of the Philharmonic harmonic Society, in which he appeared peared under the magnificent direction tion of Nikisch, is still remembered. Thibaud. made a point of playing works by French composers. He introduced, for instance, Symphonie Espagnole, by Edouard Lalo, the Saint-Saens violin concerto, and, more recently, Chant d’Espagne, by Gustave Samazeuilh. After touring Europe he went to the two Americas and also to the Par East. Right: DAVID WELCH, of the South Pacific Company, is a guest artist in Starlight Variety on Friday, November 20.
