Summary
  • The sticker is believed to have been used to secure wrapped merchandise bought from Fleischmann’s store in Nicholas Street, Ipswich. The firm was originally established by German immigrant Johan Fleischmann who arrived in Moreton Bay in 1857. After working for saddler C. Gorry, he opened his own business in a lane between Nicholas and Ellenborough Streets. He later purchased an adjoining property and in 1876 built new business premises. His son Charles Henry Fleischmann entered the business and became the proprietor on Johan’s death in 1897. In 1907 new premises were again constructed. Fleischmann’s was a family business with 3 generations eventually working it. Harold Victor Fleischmann gave his occupation as saddler when he enlisted for the First World War. When he returned from the conflict he joined his father and brothers in the saddlery business. After their deaths, Harold became the sole owner of Fleischmann’s Saddlery on 18 September 1950. He retired in 1954 when the building was rented to Rockman’s. In the early 1980s First Provincial Building Society was located there. (from Queensland Places, John Oxley Library blog, 3 Dec 2013)
