Biography
  • The practice began in 1976, when Richard Allom, then architect with the National Trust of Queensland, set up on his own as Richard Allom : Architects. From the very beginning the practice specialised in work with historic buildings and was perhaps only the second such practice in Australia. Initially the firm rented space in Old Government House at that time the headquarters of the Trust.Within a few years an association was formed with Peter Lovell in Melbourne and in the early 1980s this association was formalised. From 1987 the Brisbane office was known as Allom Lovell Marquis-Kyle, the latter name being that of Peter Marquis-Kyle who remained a director until 1997. In 1993 Desley Campbell-Stewart became a director. With the introduction of Heritage Legislation in Queensland in 1992 there was great public and community interest in the conservation of listed buildings, the adaptation of listed buildings for new use and the design of buildings adjacent to historic sites. The practice often consulted as part of a wider team and some work was carried out in association with other architectural practices. At its peak Allom Lovell in Brisbane employed more than 18 staff.
