  • The collection consists of personal papers, correspondence, photographs, diaries, ephemera, publications, and objects relating primarily to the Marks Family of Brisbane. Other items relate to the Drury, Dods and Stodart families who were related to the Marks through marriage. The collection contains significant World War I correspondence and photographs relating to the war service of Edward Oswald Marks (Ted) and his brother Alexander Hammett Marks (Alec) who were doctor soldiers. Their half-brother, Joseph Espie Dods, was also in the A.I.F. serving as a doctor. Other items of interest include a large collection of family photographs dating from the 1860s; a collection of hand-written books dating from the 1840s which include recipes, household and medical hints, lists and reviews of books and poetry; and the papers of Dr Elizabeth Nesta (Patricia) Marks who had a distinguished career as an entomologist.
Biography
  • The Marks family figured prominently in the social, scientific and medical spheres of Brisbane society from 1879 until the death of Dr Elizabeth Nesta (Patricia) Marks in 2002. Charles Ferdinand Marks (1852-1941) emigrated to Queensland in 1879 where he had a distinguished career as a medical practitioner and politician. His step-son, Joseph Espie Dods, and sons, Edward (Ted) Oswald Marks and Alexander (Alec) Hammett Marks, were all doctors who served during World War I. Ted Marks married Ernestine (Nesta) Roberta Barbara Drury in London in 1914. After the war he had a distinguished career as an ophthalmologist in Brisbane. His daughter, Elizabeth Nesta (Patricia) Marks (1918-2002) was an eminent entomologist, carrying out world recognised research into mosquitoes and malaria.
