Biography
  • The Valuation of Land Act 1916 (Act No. 2 1916) provided for the appointment of a Valuer-General and for the establishment of the Department of Valuer-General to bring uniformity and a overall set of valuation criteria for land in New South Wales. When the Valuer General determined the valuations for a local government area, that authority adopted these valuations for rating purposes. Field books and maps were created by the Department to assist in this process. The maps produced were revised on a regular basis. Generally valuations are undertaken every three years. Dates of revision for each numbered map may vary.
  • This area was known as Como and was part of the Municipality of Hurstville when the crown land was opened to subdivision. In 1894 it became part of Hurstville Municipality: at the Council meeting of December 20, 1894, Mr Alfred Bignell asked for the annexation of Como (source: Sargeant, Bernard. History of Hurstville Council. 2005, page 148). Annexation was gazetted in Government Gazette - July 11, 1895. In 1894 it was the Como Ward of Hurstville Council then in 1900 it became part of Peakhurst Ward. It was annexed to Sutherland Shire on August 4, 1922 and was referred to as Glass & Bottle Point. This later changed to East Menai. In 1960, the area was renamed Illawong. The suburb of Illawong was named in January 18, 2008 (source: Geographical Names Board).
  • Frederick Rutherford Shaw was a real estate agent and auctioneer. He operated a real estate agency in the Sutherland Shire and had the distinction of being the first full-time vendor in the Cronulla-Sutherland area. He worked initially in the office of William Souter after serving in World War One and where his brother Edward Seymour Shaw also worked. F.R. Shaw became a partner in 1922. Auction rooms were built on Cronulla Street, Cronulla. Although the partnership was dissolved in 1923 Fred retained the auction rooms and the Cronulla Estate Agency. He married Grace Upfold in 1924. In 1938 Seymour transferred his Miranda real estate business to his brother. F.R. Shaw expanded his real estate interests by buying the business of C.J. Monro in 1949. This he conducted as C.J. Monro Pty Ltd. He continued to operate the businesses alone until Seymour rejoined in 1965. Upon the death of Seymour in 1968 a board of Directors was set up to control the firm F.R. Shaw Pty Ltd. The company was sold in the early 1970s and Fred resigned as director and stepped away from the business.
