Summary
  • MR E THORPE
  • Black and white photoprint of Thorpe's butchery in High Street - a modest, weatherboard structure. Carcases hang from hooks outside the shop on the street. A sign in the window advertises "cool storage". The text notes that the location had been used by butchers since 1850 - Messrs Pipe, Pegg and Simmonds respectively.
  • Image published in 'City of Prahran jubilee history and illustrated handbook: South Yarra, Toorak, Malvern, etc', Melbourne: Periodicals Publishing Company, 1906 p.175. Notes can be located to accompany most of the photos by consulting the indexes at the front of the book; some of these notes are quite detailed, though the tone is usually self-congratulatory, suggesting that inclusion may have been by subscription.
  • [transcript of notes]
  • A steady, all-round trade secures for Mr Thorpe's butchering establishment the opinion that the business in not in its infancy. As a matter of fact, the year 1850 marked the first sale in the shop. It was then conducted by Mr Pipe, then by Mr Pegg and, for a quarter of a century, by Mr Simmonds. The present proprietor assumed control 13 years ago. Families are promptly waited on for orders, small goods being supplied daily. There is a cooling chamber on the premises, which are situated at 347 and 349 High Street, Prahran.
