Summary
  • THE PICTURES OF 1929 A REVIEW of this year's film activities necessarily has sensational sational aspects through the manner in which talking pictures have swept the screen. Predictions of December, ber, 1928, mentioned a mere handful as the number of theatres which could be wired in 1929. Not even those most enthusiastic about the possibilities of talkies would have believed that within twelve months approximately 250 theatres would possess installations. lations. Given their introduction to Australia at the Lyceum and Tegent Theatres, Sydney, on December 29, 1928, synchronised .nd dialogue pictures notched the amazing aggregate of between and £8,500 as the week’s receipts. Initial features were 41 Jolscn in “The Jazz Singer'’ at the Lyceum, and the synchronised chronised version of “The Red Dance” at the Lyceum, both supported by shorts. Ten days afterwards the Prince Edward completed its installation and put on “Street Angel,” synchronised. ised. Within a few weeks the Melbourne Athenaeum and Auditorium torium were presenting sound, but not with the instantaneous success that greeted the Sydney opening. In Melbourne the business was slow to start, but, once under way, the swing to talkies was just as complete as it had been in Sydney. The first feature in which dialogue played any really important ant part in dramatic development was “Mother Knows Best,” while “In Old Arizona” was the first 100 per cent, dialogue picture ture shown in Sydney. The three talkies which probably have set up the best records for the year are “The Jazz Singer,” Broadway Melody” and “Innocents of Paris.” Following them would come “Alias Jimmy Valentine,” “In Old Arizona.” Coincident with the rise of sound was the fall of silence. American concentration on dialogue production necessarily was at the expense of the silent picture on which the great majority of Australian exhibitors have had to depend this year. The silent successes would be counted on one hand. For exhibitors as a whole the year has been one of the worst in their experience. Caught between industrial depression sion and the sound vogue, their situation has been unenviable; nor will the installation of equipment fully solve the problems of the suburban man. In the cities talkies as talkies have ceased to be an attraction. tion. There is no longer a boom, but a permanent establishment : of sound, and a levelling of business has naturally followed. until the position in no way differs from the silent days when the box-oltice merit of the individual picture was the only factor to determine success. What has happened to the British film on the Australian market makes a disastrous record. This time last year conditions tions were such that the English picture had every prospect of a strong break into our theatres. The exhibitor attitude towards them had undergone a decidedly favorable change through the improvement in quality and entertainment value a year of intensive sive effort by the British studios had achieved. In a moment talkies wiped that out. Cessation of production in England resulted in a cessation of important releases here, and now only is the British distributor in Australia showing any sign of emerging from his difficulties, possessed of talking pictures which should give him another chance. “Under the Greenwood Tree” goes into the State, Sydney, next week, with “Blackmail,” banned by the Censor then passed by the Appeal Board, or “High Treason,” recently shown privately in Melbourne, probably bably the next major British dialogue dramas to secure Australian lian release. Earlier productions labelled British have either been made entirely in U.S.A., with English capital, or have had their synchronisation and talking sequences added in America. Troublous as business conditions have been, the political aspect has also given the industry much concern. Prior to its defeat, the Bruce-Page Government proposed a tax of 5 per cent, on the gross-receipts of theatres taking more than £lOO a week. It also announced a 12J per cent, levy on all mon-y sent overseas to foreign film producers. Duty on foreign film was increased from one penny three-farthings to three pence per foot, an increase which stands, although the wrecking of the Nationalist-Country Party Government and the election of a Labor Ministry meant the abandonment of the other taxatioa proposals. Another feature of 1929 has been the decided swing of legitimate managements to talking pictures. Union Theatres are now onerating three Fuller houses: St. James, Sydney; Victoria. Newcastle; and Princess, Melbourne. Hoyts, linked with .1. C. Williamson, are operating the Theatre Royal, Sydney, and His Majesty’s. Brisbane. Union Theatres are also running the Athenaeum. Melbourne, as a talkie house, while the Sydney Emoire after a hectic musical comedy and revue career, has embarked on a sound-picture policy under independent direction. tion.
