TYTORKING on a production budget of £3,500,000 for 1927-28, Fox W already has a big percentage of its new season’s production completed, pleted, according to an announcement by the company. Normally a current season’s product is not completed until late in May, but Winfield field R. Sheehan, in re-organising the Fox studios last year, effected a speed-up which is now showing results. Important among the company’s new star-developments is Victor McLaglen, who scored in “What Price Glory,” and who again comes under Raoul Walsh’s direction. “Is Zat So?” and “The Cradle Snatchers” are among the stage successes to be filmed. PICTURES for the coming year, now CQjnoleted, include eight specials: “Sunrise,” directed by F. W. Murnau; “7th Heaven,” directed ed by Frank Borzage; and “Carmen,” men,” directed by Raoul Walsh. “7th Heaven,” the latest of the big pictures to reach completion, will be shown at the Carthay Circle Theatre, Los Angeles. It stars Janet Gaynor and Charles Farrell. “Sunrise” is the most expensive production in Fox history, and is rated in filmland as the second most expensive picture ever made. Its leading roles are played by George O’Brien and Janet Gaynor. “Carmen” is portrayed with Victor McLaglen, Dolores Del Rio and Don Alvarado in the well-known roles. The studios in New York will produce twelve pictures during the coming year. Joseph W. Engel is studio manager and Allan Dwan and other well known directors will handle the megaphone. Additional stages will be built at once on the Fox Hills properties at Westwood, where two stages will be placed near the Pico Boulevard frontage and an administration building erected there. The stages will measure three hundred by six hundred feet. Electrical engineers have also completed arrangements for the establishment of a permanent ent circuit of electricity to take care of the night sets that will be shot from time to time; A central power plant and storage and distribution bution system to cost £60,000 is also arranged. Mr. Sheehan will go to Europe in June, and while there will spend four weeks in the Fox Studios in Berlin. These studios are under the management of Carl Freund, noted cameraman, who recorded “Variety,” and is now in charge of Fox European production. tion. Product for the new year will include “The Joy Girl,” written for the “Saturday Evening Post” by May Edginton and now being picturised turised in Palm Beach under the direction of Allan Dwan, with Olive Borden as star. John Ford is now in Germany shooting scenes for a special written ten by I. A. R. Wylie. Jack Blystone stone will also direct a special featuring turing the two comedy heroes of “What Price Glory,” Ted Mc- Namara and Sammy Cohen. Frank Borzage will direct “The Grand Army Man” with Alec Francis cis in the name role. “Prince Fazil,” a romantic stage success in London and JParis, and to be opened in New York in September, tember, is on the list. Heading the cast will be Charles Farrell and Dolores Del Rio, with Howard Hawks directing. “Frozen Justice,” an epic of the Arctic, will be made by John Ford, from the book by the Danish explorer, plorer, Captain Ejnar Mikkelsen. Another production will be the well known Belasco stage play, “The Comedian,” written by Sacha Guitry. Fox also announces the purchase of “The Mud Turtle,” one of the outstanding stage successes of the past few years. “Balaoo,” the mystery novel by Gaston Leroux, is a melodrama to be staged by A 1 Ray. The English play, “None But the Brave,” a comedy drama by Bernard Merivale and Brandon Fleming, has also been purchased for immediate production. Howard Hawks is shooting “Cradle Snatchers,” with Louise Fazenda and a cast of well known principals, while Alfred Green is producing “Is Zat So?” with George O’Brien, Edmund Lowe, Kathryn Perry, and Douglas Fairbanks, banks, Jnr., in the cast. Following “Carmen,” Raoul Walsh will begin work on a story of the underworld, written for Victor tor McLaglen.
