Summary
  • The Violent Offender Treatment Program (VOTP) is a 1-year residential therapy program delivered by Corrective Services NSW for male prisoners. Eligible candidates must have been sentenced to a non-parole period of at least 2 years for a violent offence and have a history of committing violent offences in custodial settings: violent offenders who have committed a domestic violence or a sexual offence or who are assessed as having high levels of psychopathic tendencies are considered suitable. This paper investigates participants' re-offending and return to custody outcomes 24 months after they completed the program. Data were obtained for all 587 offenders referred to the program between 2007 and 2014 and released from prison, whether the program was commenced or completed or not. The analysis found that both starting or completing the program were associated with significantly lowered probability of general re-offending or returning to custody, but no significant association with the probability of violent re-offending. Further research is required.
