Summary
  • Collection of maps primarily regarding the Sydney Expansion Scheme. Proposed and championed by Lewis in the period 1897-1931, the Scheme comprised plans to expand and join the Cooks and Parramatta Rivers, and to develop Botany Bay as a port. The ultimate goal was to relieve congestion within Sydney and establish the Parramatta region as an industrial centre. Chiefly produced by Lewis himself, the collection is comprised of maps showing various aspects of the Expansion Scheme, including proposed routes for canals, roads, and railways. Features diazotypes, newspaper cuttings, and photographs relating to the Scheme. Cadastral maps of the Parramatta region of New South Wales are also included, some of which are Lewis' own tracings, others lithographs produced on behalf of the United Land & Investment Society. Finally, the collection features a number of printed thematic maps, parish maps, and topographic maps, most produced by Australian Government bodies, as well as road maps by H. E. C. Robinson. Most of the items in this collection have been annotated.
