Biography
  • The Independent Order of Rechabites was a Friendly Society founded in England in 1835 as part of the wider British temperance movement to promote total abstinence from alcoholic beverages. Always well connected in upper society and involved in financial matters, it gradually transformed into a financial institution which still exists, and still promotes abstinence. A branch was established in the United States in 1842, and the Order was active in Australia from the 19th century into the 20th century promoting temperance and as a benefit society.
  • John Thomas Reid (Jack or JT) was born in Wandella, NSW, 1883. He was the youngest son of an immigrant Irish cheesemaker. JT attended school at Suggan Buggan, Victoria, before they moved to Bruthen, Victoria. JT married Maggie Annie Gordon Sandy in [1910] and had four children. After WW2, he bought a dairy farm at Cora Lyn, Victoria, where he lived until the mid-1950s. JT died in Dandenong, Victoria in 1965.
