Summary
  • "This short history follows the Walsh family line of the author John Patrick Walsh from Ireland to southern Africa. His great-great-grandfather, Garrett Walsh, a cooper by trade, married Jane Clancy (born 1774) in Limerick, Ireland, on 15th September 1793. Their seventh offspring, Garrett, also a cooper, enlisted in the 27th Inniskilling Regiment at the age of 19 and in 1835 sailed on duty for the Cape of Good Hope. At the age of 25 he purchased his discharge at Cape Town and resumed his trade as a cooper. Here he met and married Mary Ann Cullen, born 1819 in Ireland, the daughter of John Cullen a mason and builder. The Cullens arrived in Cape Town in 1823. Garrett and Mary Ann's first three offspring were born in Cape Town and a fourth in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. We follow the life of the third born, John James, who had trained as a teacher and became headmaster of various schools in the eastern Cape Province and subsequently moved to Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). His marriage to Johanna Suzanna Potgieter in 1881 opens a much wider and very interesting gene pool, producing 10 offspring. Here we meet with their eighth born, Wilfrid Cullen de Clancy Walsh (born 1893) who was the father of the author. Both father and son studied forestry at Oxford but whereas his father practiced in India and the Rhodesias the author practiced in Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) and Tasmania. Along the way we follow the destinies of various other family members, including Mary Ann's brother, Patrick, who went to the goldfields of Victoria, Australia, in 1852."--Back cover.
